A Bit About Dressing Gowns

A dressing gown is great in the winter when the house is cold and you want to stay warm, but it is also useful the rest of the year when you want to get out of the shower and just sit in your dressing gown having your breakfast reading and reading the morning paper.

Dressing gowns were first worn by men in the 1 seventeenth century. The ancestor of the dressing gown was the banyan. The banyan refers to many different styles of robes worn by men from the late seventeenth to early nineteenth century. The banyan was basically an un-tailored robe with loose sleeves was worn indoors during the day for lounging about, or at night time before bed or if you had to get up in the night over the nightgown. Since the seventeenth century into different types of night wear such as the bathrobe, a towelling robe in a heavier such as flannel or fleece for after showering, or the silk dressing gown which is best for lounging around in or looking seductive before bed time. Modern men's dressing gowns usually resemble bathrobes.

Is there a less fashionable garment than a dressing gown ? They may seem uncool, the sort of thing that old men wear but dressing gowns can be cool objects of desire. Designers such as Paul Smith do some very nice dressing gowns; in his case a very nice paisley patterned number in cotton. I remember visiting one of the classic English mens outfitters on Jermyn Street in London with a friend who was getting married and looking for an outfit. They had some fantastic dressing gowns in very heavy weight silk towelling fabric with hoods that looked like the best things to be lounging around the house in. They were however hugely expensive and I had to let my dressing gown fetish go unfulfilled.
